Do You Fear Missing God's Voice?

Many times people are afraid of trying to hear God speak because they are afraid that they will hear "wrong."

The truth is there are times you will hear wrong. There are times you'll hear the voice of your own flesh or you will hear a counterfeit spirit trying to get you off course.  (This is why we test the spirits.)

Expecting to hear the voice of God perfectly would be like expecting a toddler to stand up and start walking without ever falling down. We learn through the falling down. We learn what not to do next time. Therefore, if the devil can get you to fear not hearing God perfectly - he can keep you from learning to walk in the spirit. Nobody does it perfectly from the first step. But if you do it enough times - you'll soon begin to walk and then run.

Hearing the voice of God takes the faith of a child. Your Father isn't disappointed when you miss his voice - he's thrilled that you tried!

Don't be so focused when you fail. Make the necessary corrections, get up and try again!

-----------------------

A common theme with those who struggle to hear God’s voice is that they haven’t learned to hear with their spirit instead of their soul.

Our soul is made up of our mind, will, and emotion. But our spirit is breathed into us by God at conception. God gives each person a slice of his image, His essence. Our spirit is the place where we have a relationship with God, not our souls.

John 4:24 “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."

We hear God and worship Him with our spirits. Many Christians have been taught to lead their lives with their soul... but that is not how God meant for us to live. We’re supposed to let our spirits be the engineer of our life-train.

The soul is our “natural man.” When we let this part of ourselves lead our lives, we are essentially living out of our intellect.

Since God is a Spirit, he doesn’t commune with us through our intellect. God speaks to us through our spirits.

1 Corinthians 2:14 “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”

So....If you want to hear God’s voice better simply ask for your spirit to come forward and be the engineer of your train instead of your soul. This takes practice. Especially if you have shoved your spirit back in the caboose for a long period of time. Most people who struggle with being in “control” have trouble trusting their spirits because they trust intellect more.  But we are to be led by the Spirit!

Romans 8:14 “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

You can do this!! Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to let your spirit lead!

A Word for Those Struggling with Self-Doubt

Six or seven months ago I had hit a rough patch where self-doubt kept weaving its way into my mind.  The feeling of being vulnerable and exposed would paralyze me.  I was moving more slowly than normal.  I kept doubting that I was really hearing God and I was doubting my authority over the enemy.

It wasn’t a constant barrage of self-doubt.  Just a few times a week, I would second guess the steps I took.  In the Lord’s graciousness, He brought me some discipline as to why I kept falling into self-doubt.

I share with you the word He gave to me in the hopes that it will help some of you who have had the same struggles I have had.

Beloved, Self-doubt is your biggest enemy.

You cannot doubt yourself if your faith is in Me.

Because it won't rely on you.

I will never fail you.  Can you ever think of a time when you needed words that I did not give them to you?

Self-doubt means you are focused inward not upward.

Self-doubt means you are worried about what others think.

The root of self-doubt is the approval of men.

You doubt that you are hearing Me, but I have given you protocols to test My voice.  Don’t be foolish and not test the Spirits.  But also don’t be overly full of doubt and miss My voice either.

My protocols are never turned off.  You can always test the spirits.  You can always ask for wisdom. You always have authority over the spiritual atmosphere.

The demonic must always submit and move out of the way if you tell them to do so. But if you don’t believe your words – there is no faith behind them.  The enemy does not have to obey you,  if you do not believe your own words.  If you doubt your authority – you are like a wave on the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  You won’t receive anything because it is not coming from faith.

If there is fogginess, take authority over the fogginess.

If there is doubt, take authority over the doubt and take captive your thoughts and submit them to Me.

If you can’t hear Me, take authority over a “famine of hearing the words of the Lord.”  Command the heavens and the skies to open up for you.

Your authority has been bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus.

When you doubt that you are taking the right step – remember that I can easily correct your path, if you are seeking My Kingdom first.  I will never let you fall if you are seeking after Me with a pure heart.

No one walks through life perfectly.  But if you remember My goodness and the depth of My love for you, you will not walk in the fear of man – and you will walk in faith of who I AM.

Do not walk in the self- doubt of your inadequacies.  Walk in the faith that I hold the whole world in My hands and I have your best interests at heart.

I never let the righteous fall.

Psalm 55:22  (NLT)

22 Give your burdens to the Lord,

and he will take care of you.

He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

Steps to Wholeness:

Father God, please forgive my unbelief and my self-doubt.  Forgive me for caring too much about what men think of me.  I trust You.  I trust You to correct me.  I trust You to carry my burdens.  Help me to remember to test the spirits but not to fear mis-hearing Your voice.   I want to know You.  I want to walk with You.  I lay down my self-doubt and I hand You my burdens.  I want Your will and Your ways – I believe that You will not permit the godly to slip and fall.  Thank You, Lord, for Your graciousness.  In the mighty name of Jesus, AMEN!

Why Believers Should Start Journaling

It's so important to journal.  I have kept a journal since my mid-20s.   That’s about twenty years of writing down the things God has done in my life.  It does not come naturally to me.  It’s hard.  Sometimes it irritates me to take time out of my day to journal, but the Lord impressed something so deeply on my heart that I dare not stop journaling!

One day I was reading 1 Samuel 3:19 and the Lord spoke to me in such a clear way that I experienced the fear of the Lord over His instruction to me.  The verse is about the Prophet Samuel and how he first heard the Lord’s voice. Then verse 19 says this:

The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.

The Lord spoke to me and said, “Tisha, I honored Samuel by letting none if his words fall to the ground.  Would you honor Me by letting none of My words fall to the ground?”

I felt the Lord so strongly about this challenge.  He was asking me to love Him and fear Him by taking His words VERY seriously.  I felt like if the God of the universe decided to open up heaven and speak to me then at the very least, I could honor His words by writing them down.

For 20 years I have written down every time He has pointed out a new revelation in His word.  I wrote down my dreams.  I wrote down the interpretations of my dreams.  I wrote down my a-ha moments.  I wrote down when I heard His Holy Spirit speak to me.  I wrote down the revelations I received from sermons I listened to.  I wrote down my visions I would have as I prayed.  I recorded my complaints to Him.  I recorded my victories.  If I was depressed, I wrote it down.  If I was in doubt, I wrote it down.

And now 20 years later, I am so glad that I feared the Lord enough to write down His words.  I didn’t do it perfectly.  But I got most of them written down and then I went back and meditated on them until they were part of me.

I enjoy going back and reading about how He saw me through some difficult valleys.  I love going back and being reminded of some of the major revelations He gave me.  I love recounting my relationship with Him, even the bad days.  It is such a blessing to go back and be reminded of things I have forgotten.  It is a blessing to go back and understand why I had some of the dreams I had and how they still impact my walk with Him.

I hope my kids will one day appreciate what I have written. I hope that one day my journals will bring others life.  I hope that the revelation and words I have recorded will help others to have an easier journey through life.

Your words written down are important!  When you journal, you become a scribe who is writing down God’s story through your life. In fact, the entire Bible is written by scribes who were “journaling” God’s story.  David journaled his songs.  Solomon journaled his wisdom and his intimacy with his wife.  Luke journaled the journey of those who walked with Jesus.  John journaled a series of visions about the end times.

Now – of course, we’re not writing scripture anymore – but just think about people who might be blessed to read about God’s story through your eyes?  What if you feared God so much and respected His words so much that you wrote down everything He said and did in your life.  Wouldn’t that be an amazing gift to those who come behind you?  What if your great-grandchildren are able to read your journals and come to Christ because of them?  What if God uses your journals to set other people free and increase their faith?

We overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony!  Journaling is a way of writing down your testimony.

The second verse the Lord impressed on me about journaling comes from Habakkuk's 2:2-3:

“Then the LORD replied: "

Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets

so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time…”

Don’t let any of God’s words fall to the ground.  Write down the revelation and make it plain!  There may be some people who need to hear what God is saying to you!

I ask the Lord to pour out His “scribing” anointing on His people! We need to hear what God is saying to you!

Steps to Maturity:

God help me to fear you so much that I never let another word you speak to me fall to the ground.  Grant to me the desire to write down my revelation and my journey with You.  Help my words to make a difference in another person’s life.  In Jesus Name!  AMEN

Green Beans Aren’t in the Bible

I first published this article about a year ago.  I felt the Holy Spirit nudge me to publish it again because I have run into several people who are struggling to get free of the "circumcision" doctrine.

The divisive and paralyzing doctrine found in Galatians 2 and Titus 1 - is a doctrinal belief that our relationship with God should rest on the "law" of the Word instead of the freedom Holy Spirit.  If we are unbalanced and legalistic about the Word of God and give no room for the Holy Spirit - we have become part of the Circumcision group.

I hope these words help you to find Liberty through the Holy Spirit while remaining safely in the parameters of God's word.

I have a deep love for the Word of God.  It is a treasure to me and a symbol of safety.  I love when I can bring someone new understanding by using Scripture to unfold a revelation to them.  I also have come to love the Spirit of God.  Having the immediacy of the Holy Spirit to guide and direct me is a pearl to me and I will never let it go!  As Believers, we must learn to walk in the balance of the Word and the Spirit.

A few months ago, I had a friend ask about where our prayer about “breaking soul ties” is found in Scripture.

(click here for the Breaking Soul Ties tool)

We have had amazing testimonies about what can happen after using this tool.  Personally, I have been set free from some major strongholds by breaking soul ties.  The tool basically is a declaration that you are no longer in agreement with a person or group that you used to be in agreement with.

I decided it would be a good thing to go and find the scriptures for ALL of the tools we were using in our Victorious Prayer sessions.  As I sat down to pray for some scriptures, I had a vision of Jesus sitting in a vegetable garden in between the rows of green beans.  As I was praying about the vision, I asked the Lord why was He sitting in the green beans?

He spoke to my spirit and said,

“Green beans are not in the Bible.”

I said, “Yes, Lord I know.”  (I did a quick search on Biblegateway.com to make sure I knew what I was talking about.)  I didn’t find green beans, tomatoes, or cucumbers.

J

The Lord again spoke to my heart,

“You don’t have to prove that everything is in the Bible.  You simply have to NOT contradict the Bible.  Green beans are not in the Bible but they don’t contradict it.  The way you are doing deliverance ministry may not be specifically in the Bible – but it doesn’t contradict it.

You will put yourself in a “Bible prison” if you have to prove everything is in the Word.  I told you that you would do greater things that I did… therefore some of the things that you are going to do in your generation will not be in the Bible.  You just need to be careful to not contradict it.”

John 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

This thought really set me free.  If we are going to do greater things than Jesus, then some of what He will lead us to do will not be found in Scripture.  However, we must be careful when we walk by the Spirit to not contradict what is already written.

The Word of God will keep us safe but it is not meant to put us in a prison.  This will keep us between the

ditches on the Path of Life (Click here

).  One ditch would be requiring everything we do in the name of the Lord to be found in the Word.  The other ditch is doing something in the name of the Lord that contradicts the Word.  I am grateful for the very safe boundary lines He gave us for us staying on the Path of Life.

It is my prayer that the Body of Christ would come to know the Word of God and the Spirit of God on an even deeper level than we already do.  This is where our safety lies.

The Dangerous Sin of Presumption

As I unpack this teaching about the sin of presumption, it is my hope that it will help the Body of Christ to take a step toward the Lord in intimacy.  Repenting from presumption will position us in a place of humility that will crush the pride that is hidden in our hearts.

I’ve done it.  You’ve done it.  We have ALL committed the sin of presumption.

We have presumed to know the mind of God, but we were wrong.  We have presumed to understand His ways, but we haven’t.  We have presumed that we are in right standing with God when we are not.

The sin of presumption is presuming to know God – when we don’t really know Him and His ways.

presumption - when you believe that something is true without having any proof (Cambridge Dictionaries Online)

presumptuous - A person who is presumptuous shows little respect for others by doing things they have no right to do (Cambridge Dictionaries Online)

presumption - 1. the act of presuming; specif., a. an overstepping of proper bounds; forwardness; effrontery b. the taking of something for granted (Webster's New World College Dictionary)

The best example of presumption in the Word of God is the story of Saul of Tarsus.  Saul was a Pharisee of Pharisees.  He was superb at keeping the rules of the law and thought he was doing God a favor by putting Christians in prison.  He watched Stephen be stoned to death and approved. (Acts 22:20)

Saul presumed to be in right standing with God because of his “works.”  Saul thought he knew God inside and out…. but he didn’t.  He didn’t know the thoughts and ways of God… but he didn’t.  Saul knew the words of God and the laws of God, but he did not know the heart or the character of God.  He was blind to the fact that Jesus WAS the Son of God. (Acts 9)

Saul of Tarsus had rejected the Messiah and didn’t even know it.  He presumed to be right with God – but yet had rejected the very thing that would have made him right with God. Saul had blinders on.

We do this all the time.  We think we are right with God, but we don’t know that we don’t know.  The pride of presumption has overtaken us.  We are not seeing ourselves the way God sees us.  We are not seeing the world the way God sees the world.

God was kind to Saul of Tarsus and knocked him off of his horse, shined a light in his face, embarrassed him in front of his friends, blinded him for three days and introduced himself as Jesus, the one he’d been persecuting.

Saul was blind for three days.  God sent Ananias to give Saul back his sight.  When Ananias prayed for him, scales fell from Saul’s eyes.  Presumption fell from Saul’s eyes.  It was kind of the Lord to bring Saul to repentance because he saw Saul’s heart.  Saul was walking in pride – but his heart really did want to please the Lord.

I remember the Lord knocking me off of my horse in my late 20s.  I thought I was in right standing with the Lord – but God showed me (while reading a powerful book) that I did not have His mind concerning many things in His kingdom.  I was judging according to my own opinion and not according to His truth.  He made sure I understood that He did not care one bit about my opinion.

God is only concerned with His plan and His Kingdom.

I was shocked that I had been wearing blinders.

I was in presumption that my thoughts lined up with His.  I wrongly assumed that I was OK with Him.  It hurt a lot to be humbled.  It hurt a lot to realize that I was so far away from Him.  I was embarrassed, and I was cut to the heart that I had been so prideful.

I am really grateful that the Lord chose to knock me off of my horse.  I took my pride to the Lord and repented for it.  The Lord removed the scales from my eyes and showed me that I had been trusting in my own confidence.

He said, “Tisha, it is presumptuous for you to have confidence in your own opinions.  My truth and My ways are the only things that should give you confidence.  Stand in the confidence that My ways are higher and better than yours.”

Ask the Lord to show you if you are wearing any blinders?   Are you walking in presumption? Do you have any scales over your eyes?  Only the Lord knows.  Ask Him to knock you off of your horse if you need to.  While there might be pain for a moment, in the long run, it will be the best prayer you’ve ever prayed!

Isaiah 55:6-9

Seek the Lord while he may be found;

call on him while he is near.

Let the wicked forsake their ways

    and the unrighteous their thoughts.

Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,

and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways,”

declares the Lord.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Learning to Hear from God: Confirmation or Coincidence?

As we are maturing in Christ one of the biggest skills we must sharpen is how to hear from Him.

Learning to hear from God requires that we distinguish His voice from our own fleshly desires.  It also requires us to separate God’s truth from the enemy’s lies.

This task of trying to understand the Lord is one of the most difficult tasks that we have on the path to maturity...  But it is vitally important that His people hear His voice!

One of the ways that we distinguish the voice of the Lord from other voices is to wait for confirmation.

A “confirmation” is a way that God repeats what He said the first time.  It helps us to know that He IS really speaking to us.

I remember a friend who was in a conflict with a few people within her church, she felt like she heard the Lord tell her that she was to remain steadfast in her stance and that her “opponents” were not hearing Him because they had their own agenda.  But she was unsure that she was really hearing the Lord.

I saw her as she emerged from a Church Bible Study one evening with LIFE on her face and she said that in the middle of Bible Study the leader had them turn to Matthew 15:8, which read “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”  The Holy Spirit fell on her as these words were read and she just knew that she was hearing the Lord and that He had brought confirmation.

This is how we should operate when we have doubts about hearing God – we need to ask God for confirmation.

"Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”  2 Corinthians 13:1

One of the problems that we run into is understanding the difference between confirmation and coincidence.

There have been times in walking through the lessons of maturity that I had my own will at work in my life.  I stumbled several times in my early days because I thought I found a scripture that confirmed what was in my mind.  But it wasn’t really confirmation… it was coincidence.

The difference was – that the Holy Spirit was not part of the “confirming.”  It was all head knowledge.  When waiting on a second witness from the Lord about what He’s saying – we must be aware that the Holy Spirit is engaged in the confirming.

Not everything in our minds is from the Lord.  Some of it has come from our own will.  Some of it has come from the enemy.  The skill that Believers MUST sharpen in themselves is the ability to discern between the three voices.

Waiting for confirmation from the Lord can be one way that discernment is sharpened.  The Lord is never in a hurry.  We can put something on the shelf until He brings a second or third witness to what He is trying to say to us.

The enemy knows how to use coincidence to draw us into a trap.

I know a man who felt like the Lord wanted him to purchase a specific building and God would use it to prosper his family.   He “heard” the Lord tell him, “This is what I have promised you.”  It was a lot of money and it was a big risk.  But he felt certain that he heard the Lord.  It turned out to be a disaster and put the family further into debt.   It seemed like confirmation but really it was the enemy using coincidence.

This man failed to get a second or third witness and to ask the Body of Christ to pray with him about it.

The voice felt VERY real to the man.  But that’s what the enemy does.  He’s a counterfeiter.  He tries to sound like the Lord.  One of my friends says that Satan is the “Great Almost.”

If your spirit feels odd about something that you are hearing from the Lord… just wait.

Take your time and pray.

Take authority over all counterfeit confirmations and coincidences.  Ask the Lord to show you His voice.  Trust Him to separate the Holy from the profane.

Ask your friends to pray.  Tell them you don’t want their advice.  Tell them you’d like for them to listen to the Lord on your behalf.

Be sure that you are feeling the confirmation of the Holy Spirit.  He is intimately involved in all of the things of the Kingdom.

Remember – if you ask for wisdom (which is asking for the mind of Christ)  He always gives it and NEVER denies it.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,

because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

  James 1:5-8

Be careful once you hear His voice and have the confirmation you have asked for to not fall into doubt and disbelief!  Hang onto God’s word with all of your might!

Hearing God's Voice: Learning to Test the Spirits

When I was first learning to hear from God – I had no one to train me about how to test the spirits to see if they were really the Holy Spirit.  I made many mistakes as I was first trying to hear God for myself.

God does speak through His word.  But He also speaks through the Holy Spirit directly to our spirit.  I was brought up on a foundation of only hearing God through the Bible.  But as I matured, the Lord wanted to speak to me directly through the Holy Spirit.

I want to share a few things that I learned in my process of maturity in the hope that it might keep you from making the same mistakes I did!

Test the Spirits

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.  1 John 4:1-3

My interpretation of this verse is that everything you hear must acknowledge and line up with the character of Jesus Christ.  If we hear a spirit that does not conform to the image of who we know Christ is -- then it is the Spirit of the “Anti-Christ.”

Learning to test the spirits has been a process though.  It is not easy to distinguish between God’s words, the devil’s words and my own thoughts.  It takes time to practice!  My friend Scott says, "The devil is the 'Great Almost.'"

I do not have it all figured out.  I do still miss it on occasion, but that just keeps me humble to know that I do not hear 100% correctly from the Holy Spirit.  I only hear “in part” and need others to help me hear more accurately.

An Example of Failure

I had toyed with the idea of going to a local benefit fundraiser that was also a contest for a big prize amount.  It was for local businesses.  I thought it might be a good way to rub elbows and meet some new people.  But I wanted God’s direction to go as it cost $100 to attend and that was a big chunk of money for me then.

I was returning from taking my boys to a local fair about 4 pm one afternoon and I heard a spirit say “Why aren’t you going to the fundraiser?  I told you to go to the fundraiser!” The voice I heard was frantic and frustrated at me.  The fundraiser began at 6 pm that evening.  So I rushed home, put on some fresh clothes and bought my $100 ticket at the door.

In short, there was no fruit at all from that dinner/fundraiser.  I didn’t even make any new contacts.  I thought to myself, well maybe I was supposed to sow money into the fundraiser and there will be a harvest from it.  But a few years later, there was still no harvest from that $100.

I began to ask the Lord if I had missed it.  He showed me through a series a “lessons” that He never speaks to me in franticness.  He is never frustrated at me.  His character is to have limitless patience.  He showed me that He did not tell me to sow that $100, but the enemy came to steal it from me and I believed the spirit because I didn’t test the spirit that spoke to me.  The spirit that spoke to me on the way home from the fair did not represent the character of Christ.

If you hear someone or a spirit speak to you and that spirit does not line up with the character of who Christ is then it is not from God.

The voice I heard on the way home from the fair was not a representative of Christ because the spirit was impatient with me.

Another Example of Missing It

A pastor had been sharing with me what a crazy experience that he had been having with the Lord and it was exhausting him.  He was awakened very early in the morning by a spirit and the Lord would begin to speak to him.  He felt that he had to obey the spirit because He was getting some wonderful revelation – but he was only getting 3 hours of sleep a night.

I felt a red flag in my spirit and I told him that it sounded like a “tormenting” spirit to me.  I said this because Scripture says “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for he (God) grants sleep to those he loves.”  Psalm 127:2

God wants us to be healthy – a lack of sleep does not make for a healthy lifestyle.  He can give us all the revelation we need during a 16 hour day.  He grants sleep to those he loves.  This spirit was trying to steal from the pastor, his family and his flock.

The pastor received my counsel and refused this spirit and his sleep evened out again.

This is how to discern whether a spirit is from God – does the Spirit line up with Scripture or the character of Jesus?

A Piece of Wisdom

This might seem kind of crazy but this is how I have learned to test the spirits.  I ALWAYS tell the spirit no.

Whenever I hear a spirit tell me to do something or to say something.  I tell the spirit no.  And the reaction of the spirit tells me if it is Christ like or not.

For instance, the other day I heard a spirit tell me to do something and I wasn’t quite sure it was the Lord.  So I spoke to the spirit in my mind and said, “You know I’m going to have to test you.”  I heard the inner voice answer me.  “Yes I know you are.”

I felt complete peace.  No demanding voice to tell me to obey.  No tormenting spirit telling me that if I didn’t do it I’d be disobedient.  No frantic, agitated voice making me feel shame. I set my mind to NOT do what the voice was telling me for a few minutes.  And I had nothing but peace the whole time.

About 3 minutes later, I heard the same voice give me the same directions.  I said “No.  I am not going to do that.”  Again, I felt complete peace.  No pressure.  No accusation.  I felt the spirit be completely humble and patient with me.

So about 5 minutes later, I heard the same voice again, give me the same direction.  I said “Lord if that is you – what will you do if I refuse to obey you?”  He said, “I will wait for you to hear Me.”

It was at this point I could begin to trust the spirit.  The spirit that spoke to me was peaceful, patient, kind, gentle, generous, respectful, not demanding that I submit to it.

I then obeyed the spirit that I heard and my action bore great fruit.

If you surmise that a spirit who is speaking to you is not from the Lord – this is what you should do.  Tell that spirit to be quiet in the name of Jesus.  Bind it from talking to you and pray that the angels would loose it away from you and take the spirit to the feet of Jesus Christ.

I encourage you to step out and try to hear the voice of God!  Don’t be afraid of hearing the Holy Spirit… it leads to maturity.  But test the spirits.  God will never lead you to do something that is not Scriptural nor will He speak to you using a tone that is not in His character.

Be brave and learn to listen!

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. – John 10:27

How Renewing Your Mind Works

The ultimate goal of a Believer is to become like Christ.  God “predestined us to be conformed to the image of His son.” (Romans 8:29)  The renewing of our mind is foundational in our transformation into the image of Christ.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship.  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:1-2

But how does the “renewal” of our mind really work?  Why is it necessary for us to become like Christ?

We are immersed in the world from the day we are born.  We experience positive and negative emotions every day of our lives.  We can have negative experiences as children if we come from a broken home.  We can have positive experiences such as birthdays or fulfilled childhood dreams.

We are actually programmed from the womb to process our thoughts through our positive or negative experiences.

Since we live in a fallen and imperfect world.  We are constantly bombarded with the lies of the enemy to our minds convincing us to process our experiences through the lens of darkness.  But God needs for us to process our experiences through His lens of Truth.  We need to be able to line up our thinking with heaven… not hell.

It is then that we will be able to test and approve what God’s will is.  It is THEN that we will live victoriously.  Anything that we process through a wrong filter keeps us bound to the lies of the enemy.  When we process everything – whether positive or negative through God’s filter – He gives us His truth about the actual experience and we are set free from the chains of the lie

In essence, renewing of our minds is taking all negative and positive experiences and processing those experiences through the mind of Christ.

I’ll give you a personal example.

When my birth father, without any warning, took my brother and me to live with my aunt and uncle in a different state, I was devastated.  This experience at age 8 caused me to feel abandoned.  I felt devalued.  I didn’t feel protected anymore.  I felt like my father dropped me into a brand new story and then drove away with the story God meant for me to have.  My world shattered and I built really thick walls to protect my heart.

From this point forward I believed five lies about God because I processed who my Heavenly Father was through the lens of my earthly father.  This one negative experience caused me to be crippled in my thinking.

1) My Heavenly Father couldn’t be trusted.

2) I believed that God would abandon me at any moment.

3) I believed I had to work to make myself valuable to God.

4) I didn’t REALLY trust Him to defend me.

5) I believed that I no longer had a story of my own.

In my 20s as I drew closer to the Lord I felt His pull to become like Him.

The first prayer I prayed that was a “mind renewing” prayer was a very simple – LORD, CHANGE ME!

As I matured, the Lord very gently brought each of these lies to the surface of my heart over a period of a few years. He showed me that He was nothing like my earthly father.  He showed me that I could trust Him.  I learned to believe God’s Word over my experiences.  I learned to trust Him when He said, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you!”

He eventually renewed my mind about the other lies I believed as well.  I was a cherished daughter no matter how I performed.  And He is my strong defender.

He used a vision to help me overcome one particular negative emotion from this experience.  I had a hard time coming to the understanding that my story did not drive away the day my dad drove away.  He drove back to my extended family and my home state.  I felt like he went back where the story of my life was taking place without me.  I felt like I began living the story of my aunt and uncle who adopted me instead.

I took this particular negative experience to the Lord in prayer.  I visualized myself in the memory with all of the negative emotion attached to it.  I saw it differently this time though – because I asked the question… “Jesus, where were you the day my dad left?”

I saw Jesus standing right next to me as my dad drove off.  And I heard Him say something that was quite profound to my little 8 year old wounded heart…. Jesus said, “And now the story goes with you.”

This may not make sense to you but this was an intense truth to me and it renewed my mind and restored my heart.  My negative experience was processed through the lens of Christ as I realized that my story was still being written.  It never left me.  My destiny was not stolen from me!

This negative experience may seem insignificant to some – but it was a HUGE negative experience in my heart and it caused me process my thoughts through these negative emotions.  I needed the Truth to set me free.  When Jesus DID give me His truth, He renewed my mind and now my thoughts are processed though His Truth instead of Satan’s lies.

This is exactly what renewing our minds is about.

Here is a picture of how we process our thoughts.  Some thoughts come from God, some of them come from the devil and others come from our own minds.  It is when we process all of these thoughts through the lens of God’s Truth that we become free.  After we have God’s Truth and renew our minds to line up with His - it is then that we come to the place of becoming like Christ.

Ask God to begin to heal your negative experiences.  Ask Him to begin to renew your mind.  I promise you it will be the best journey you’ve ever been on!
